Five ways to pair colours

Complementary

Two colours opposite on the wheel. The boldest pairing.

Example: Blue + orange, purple + yellow.

Analogous

Two or three neighbours. Soft and harmonious.

Example: Green + teal + blue.

Triadic

Three colours evenly spaced. Cheerful and balanced.

Example: Red + yellow + blue.

Split complementary

One colour + the two neighbours of its opposite. Bold but safe.

Example: Blue + orange + red-orange.

Monochrome

Dark, mid and light of one colour. Neat and elegant.

Example: Dark purple + purple + lilac.

The 60 · 30 · 10 rule

For multi-colour projects, use one main colour (60%), one supporting colour (30%) and one accent (10%). The result looks balanced, not busy.

Tips for crocheters

  • Neutrals (white, cream, grey, black) go with every colour.
  • For amigurumi, contrasting colours make details like eyes stand out.
  • For baby items, choose soft neighbouring colours on the wheel.
  • Buy all balls of one colour at once so they share a dye lot.
  • Screen colours are approximate — visit our shop in Taiping to see them in person.
